WHAT THEY SAID - James Brown

(LOADED & NME - Editor January 1993)

And finally, to get the “English Channel” going on a more positive note than the closing column of 1992, I saw a brilliant band called Subjagger playing at fine new funky playground Magick last week.

Mixing the imagery of Clockwork Orange with a smattering of 60’s singalong choruses and impressive Curtis Mayfield/Superfly-style bass licks, Subjagger were the most refreshing and inspired band I’ve seen in months.

As soon as they’re signed you’ll be the first to hear about it. (Los Angeles Album Network).

Subjagger will never be loved!

They’ll be plagued by blushing teenage girls, be reviled by those for whom The Who and Brit-rock narcissism equate with the devil, and will most probably serve out a one-album sentence on a major label. To put a finer point on it, they are Five Thirty and I claim my reward.

Except… they aren’t.

They’re retro, for sure but sometimes a three piece mix-up of guitar, bass and drums simply ends up that way. ‘So Groovy Now’ is Dodgy freed of the awful A&R friendly production, goofball lyrics and all, while ‘Don’t Make a Fool’ even has one of those twiddly Hendrix bits at the start.

You get the picture. They’re in a world where the Small Faces, Isaac Hayes and looking in the mirror are the three pillars of existence.

It’s too early to say that lives won’t be shaped by their axe-grinding power pop vignettes… The records Subjagger worship could sink battleships with one snarl from a pair of oversized lips. The flared cords are fabulous, though.

Acid Jazz now has a progressive label Focus, to which it has signed funk rockers Subjagger and dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah… ‘We want to develop bands along five year plans’ Eddie (Piller) adds.

WHAT THEY SAID - Paul Moody

(New Musical Express, September 1993).

“The Acid Jazz Label is five years old and to celebrate it’s having a baby. It’s name is Focus…. It’s first signings are Subjagger. Their songs are so steeped in the beads and flares of late 60’s London that you almost want to whisper conspiratorially in their ears that bad reviews will be theirs forever. Perhaps they know this. In which case full marks for star quality. “
